Owning a boat in Malta means near year-round use, which also means near year-round upkeep. Here’s a practical yacht maintenance checklist covering what actually needs checking, and how often.
Before Every Trip
A quick pre-departure check catches most problems before they become expensive ones. Check engine oil and coolant levels, test bilge pumps, inspect lines and fenders, and confirm navigation lights work. It takes ten minutes and saves a lot of hassle.
Monthly Checks
Once a month, look deeper. Inspect the hull above the waterline for scratches or blistering, check battery terminals for corrosion, and test safety equipment including fire extinguishers and life jackets. Salt air works fast in Malta, so corrosion checks matter more here than in cooler climates.

Seasonal Maintenance
Antifouling, hull cleaning, and engine servicing typically follow a seasonal rhythm rather than a monthly one. Plan haul-out work around the sailing season, not around when something finally fails.
Annual Deep Checks
Once a year, go beyond the visible. Have the rigging inspected, check through-hull fittings and seacocks, and service the engine properly rather than just topping up fluids. These are the checks that prevent the expensive failures.
Keep a Maintenance Log
A simple log of what was done and when makes it far easier to spot patterns, plan ahead, and hand over accurate history if you ever sell the boat.
