Teak Deck Repair & Re-caulking

Teak decks restored and resealed

Malta's sun dries teak out, greys it and breaks down the caulking between the planks. Once the seams fail, water gets under the deck. We re-caulk failed seams, repair damaged planks, sand back worn decks, and clean and protect the teak – using ZETA and Teak Decking Systems caulks.

What's included

  1. 01

    Re-caulking

Old caulk is cut and raked out, the seams are sanded clean, primed where needed, and re-caulked with flexible, UV-resistant marine caulk, then sanded flush.

  2. 02

    Sanding & plank repairs

Worn, uneven decks are sanded back to fresh wood. Loose, lifting or damaged planks are re-bonded or repaired.

  3. 03

    Cleaning & protection

We clean and brighten grey teak and seal it to slow greying, without making the deck slippery.

Why choose MMR

  • Professional caulks

We use ZETA 1200 FC and Teak Decking Systems SIS 440 – flexible, UV-resistant caulks made for teak decks.

  • Seams done properly

Every seam is raked out and sanded clean before caulking, because new caulk only lasts if it bonds to clean wood.

  • The right treatment

Some decks only need a clean; others need re-caulking or sanding. We tell you which, so you don't pay for more than the deck needs.

Brands we work with

Signs your teak deck needs work

  • Caulking that is cracked, shrunk, hard, or coming away from the planks
  • Black lines that have gone grey, or gaps in the seams
  • Water getting below – leaks under the deck, or soft spots
  • Planks that are loose, lifting or worn down so the screw plugs stand proud
  • Grey, rough or stained teak

Re-caulking a teak deck

  1. Cut out the old caulk. A knife frees it from the seam walls and a reefing hook rakes it out.
  2. Clean the seams. A seam sander takes the walls back to clean wood so the new caulk can bond.
  3. Prime and tape. Primer where the caulk needs it, such as ZETA Primer 550, and bond-breaker tape in the bottom of the seam.
  4. Caulk. ZETA 1200 FC or TDS SIS 440, filled slightly proud.
  5. Cure and sand flush. Once fully cured, the deck is sanded smooth.

Sanding, cleaning and protecting

A worn or grey deck can often be brought back without re-caulking. We clean and brighten with teak cleaners such as Dulon Teak Clean & Brightener 42, then protect with Dulon Teak Protector 43 to slow greying – without making the deck slippery. Decks that are rough or uneven are sanded back to fresh wood first.

What affects the price?

The size of the deck, how many seams need re-caulking, how worn the teak is, and whether planks need repairing. A clean-and-protect is a much smaller job than a full re-caulk. Send us photos for a quote.

Questions

How do I know if my teak deck needs re-caulking?

Look for caulk that is cracked, shrunk, hard or pulling away from the planks, and for leaks below. If the seams are still flexible and bonded, the deck may only need a clean.

How long does re-caulking last?

With a good caulk applied to clean, well-prepared seams, many years. Sun and wear decide exactly how long.

Can you re-caulk only part of the deck?

Yes. Failed seams can be re-caulked in sections, which is often the most economical approach.

Should I oil my teak deck?

Oil can make the deck slippery and attract dirt. We prefer cleaning and using a protector that keeps the colour without a slippery film.

Why has my teak gone grey?

UV and weather break down the surface of the wood. Cleaning and brightening brings the colour back, and a protector slows it greying again.

Do you work on synthetic teak?

We clean and maintain synthetic teak decks too. Ask us about repairs.
