Malta’s winters are mild compared to northern Europe, but winter boat storage still needs proper preparation. Skip it, and spring can bring some unpleasant surprises.
Clean Before You Store
A hull left dirty over winter is harder to clean in spring, and salt residue left in place accelerates gelcoat damage even when the boat isn’t moving. Wash and dry the boat thoroughly before laying up.
Protect the Engine
Fogging the engine, changing the oil before storage rather than after, and disconnecting or maintaining the battery all reduce the risk of problems when you start up again in spring.

Ventilation Matters More Than People Think
A sealed-up boat traps moisture, which leads to mould and mildew below deck. Leave some ventilation, use moisture absorbers, and check on the boat periodically rather than leaving it completely closed up for months.
Cover Properly
A good cover protects against UV damage and keeps rain and debris out, but it needs to allow airflow. A cover that traps moisture underneath can do more harm than leaving the boat uncovered.
