Questions & answers
How often should a boat be antifouled in Malta?
Most boats kept in the water are antifouled once a year. Malta’s warm water speeds up fouling, so a busy or fast boat can need it more often.
How much antifouling do I need?
It depends on the hull’s underwater area and the product’s coverage. Our antifouling calculator gives an estimate from your boat’s length and beam.
Which antifouling is best for Malta?
For most boats, a self-polishing antifouling such as Seajet 033 Shogun. For aluminium hulls or a copper-free option, Seajet 038 Taisho. For fast boats and racers, Seajet 034 Emperor.
Can new antifouling go over old?
Usually, if the old coating is sound and compatible. If you don’t know what’s on the hull, seal it with a sealer primer such as Seajet 015 first.
How do I know if gelcoat damage is serious?
Chips and scratches are usually cosmetic. Cracks that go through to the laminate, soft areas and damage below the waterline need checking, because they let water into the laminate.
Is every blister on my hull osmosis?
No. Some blisters are only in the paint layers. A survey with moisture readings shows whether it’s true osmosis.
How do I know if my teak deck needs re-caulking?
Look for caulk that is cracked, shrunk, hard or pulling away from the planks, and for leaks below. If the seams are still flexible and bonded, the deck may only need cleaning.
How often should I polish my boat?
At least once a year in Malta, with a fresh coat of wax during the season. Boats kept in strong sun may need it more often.
Which epoxy hardener should I use in summer?
In Malta’s summer heat, a slower hardener such as WEST SYSTEM 206 Slow or 209 Extra Slow gives you enough working time before the epoxy starts to cure.
Do you work anywhere in Malta?
Yes – anywhere in Malta and Gozo, at the berth or in the boatyard.
